Harjo is enrolled as a student at University of New Mexico and began pre-med. Her major changed to art following the first semester. In her final year she moved to creative writing, to compose poetry as she was influenced by various Native American writers. She graduated in the year 1976. Harjo obtained an MFA in writing at the University of Iowa in 1978. She also attended an event at the Anthropology Film Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to learn about filmmaking.

In 1995, Harjo received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers’ Circle of the Americas.
